STILL RIVER SHELL
BILL WHITE
P.O. BOX 57
STILL RIVER, MA 01467
508-456-3699
Gentle User:
This file contains the revision history of the Still River
Shell's Release 2.
- RELEASE 2.58 changes:
* Adds a Fail-Safe option to the DELETE command.
* Adds an UP command which displays the file list of the
next directory up (parent) and makes it the new current
directory.
* Adds an Exit prompt option.
* Modifies the FIND command in the VIEW presentation to
automatically clear the old find field when you begin
to enter a new one.
- RELEASE 2.44 changes:
* Supports an EGA or VGA board with a monochrome display
in the high performance direct io mode.
* List size limited to available memory only. On a 640K
system, the shell can handle about 11,700 files in a
single list. Disk size limited to a 4.2 gigabytes
(4,294,967,294 bytes).
* Allocates as much free memory for work space as it
needs and releases all its work space back to DOS prior
to executing a program under DOS from within the
shell.
- RELEASE 2.36 changes:
* Modifies tag logic: a file's tag is removed after a tag
sensitive operation completes against the tagged file.
- 1 -
* Adds a new TAG subcommand: PRIOR. The PRIOR command
reestablishes the tags that existed prior to the last
tag sensitive command's execution. PRIOR is available
as a TAG subcommand, <P>, as well as a "Hidden TAG"
command, <ALT>+<P>.
* Restores the Shell's Release 1.nn XDOS command line
positioning: the DOS command line always appears at the
Shell's command line input position near the bottom of
the screen rather than where each completing program
happens to leave it.
* Increases the diskette based documentation to include a
general description of the syntax, features and
operational characteristics of the Shell's commands.
- RELEASE 2.24 changes to SR 1.82:
* Adds ATTRibute command to change file attributes.
* Adds TAG commands to the system which can tag, untag
and reverse tag individual files, selected ranges of
files, lists of files either in one directory, a list
of directories or system wide.
* Adds hidden global TAG commands (<ALT>+<F>or<G>or<D>
plus a quick flip tag, <SPACE_BAR>, which work in
command selection mode in both LIST and FIND
presentations.
* COPY, DELETE and MOVE work with a set of tagged files,
* Function Keys now execute for each tagged file if you
tag files.
* XDOS supports an Ad Hoc batch execution against a set
of tagged files with replaceable parameters in the
command line.
* Adds a new replaceable <shell_state> parameter, <%6>,
for use in an Ad Hoc batch executed XDOS command line
which can be used in place of <%4.%5>.
* Adds a file text search option to FIND.
* Adds a /v option to FIND which drops you into VIEW when
you find a file; then, you decide whether to add to the
found file to the FIND list or not.
* Adds FIND text subcommand to VIEW.
- 2 -
* Adds HEX mode to VIEW including HEX FIND.
* TREE now supports full directory tree for selected
directory. If you use (\), a directory tree of the
entire disk is displayed.
* Adds UP command to TREE.
* Adds directory summary information for all directories
and subdirectories in TREE.
* <Fn> and XDOS now use a rapid context restore facility
to restore FIND and LIST lists when they return from
DOS. There is also a flash restore option which is
even faster.
* Adds a full path insert to the command line edit.
* Access is provided to hidden and system files with
query safeguards.
* Eliminates keywords from Shell's start-up command
line.
* Pitch comes up only once a day, once or twice a month.
* OPTIONS uses an option editor, stored configuration
file and adds the following options:
- <selector> placement after SORT.
- Real time color selection.
- Monochrome display attributes.
- Memory usage display.
- Initial sort criteria.
- Case conversion.
- XDOS and <Fn> batch execution against tagged
files.
- Query during batch execution.
- Foreign language character display in VIEW.
- Context recovery technique.
- VIEW tab value.
- 3 -
- Existing target file protection.
* Speed has improved.
* Frees more memory when executing programs under DOS.
* Manual is rewritten, expanded and now wire bound
instead of three hole punched.
* Alas, the shell is no longer a light weight at 92K +
20K minimum work space.
We would like to thank our registered users whose support made
these improvements possible. And we hope you enjoy your
evaluation of the Still River Shell.
Sincerely,
Bob Dye &
Bill White
